Defending champion Venus Williams advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals after beating Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4, 6-3 Tuesday. The four-time champion from the United States will face either Elena Dementieva or Nadia Petrova in the semifinals. Tanasugarn, at 31 the oldest women in the quarterfinals, made it past the fourth round for the first time in 12 appearances at the All England Club.

Hornets nearing extension with All-Star Paul

Chris Paul's agent plans to travel to New Orleans on Wednesday with the intention of completing a contract extension that would keep the All-Star and Team USA point guard with the Hornets for an additional three to five years.
Ganassi shuts down sponsor-less Franchitti team

Co-owner Chip Ganassi has ceased operation of Dario Franchitti's race team because of a lack of sponsorship. The 2007 Indy 500 winner and IRL Series champion, who drives Ganassi's No. 40 Dodge, has struggled in his first NASCAR season. Longtime sponsor Coors Light left at the end of last season, and Ganassi was unable to secure funding for Franchitti. "If I keep going I run the risk of dragging the other two teams down. I don't want to do that," Ganassi told the Associated Press.
